Putting with a twist: England Golf swaps fairways for flamingos to attract younger players

Golf might still conjure images of pristine greens and hushed commentary, but England Golf is determined to rewrite that script, one tiki torch at a time.

In a bold move to make the sport more accessible to families and young people, England Golf has teamed up with Paradise Island Adventure Golf at Manchester’s Trafford Centre to launch Tiki Tips: Putting in Paradise. The new initiative forms part of the organisation’s wider Family Golf Month campaign and is aimed squarely at first-timers, curious kids, and holidaying parents looking for something fun and active to do over the summer.

Priced at just £10 per child, the coached sessions blend tropical-themed mini golf with real putting lessons from England Golf’s Community Golf Instructors. There is no need for clubs, kit or any experience, just enthusiasm and a sense of adventure.

We are not just teaching putting skills, said Adam McAlister of England Golf. We are creating positive first experiences with golf that could inspire a lifelong love of the sport.

Each session includes a full round of mini golf, personalised coaching, and a goodie bag to take home. With just four children per session, the emphasis is on individual attention and building confidence in a relaxed, playful setting far removed from the pressure of a traditional golf club.

The partnership reflects a growing trend in sports outreach. England Golf is taking the game to where families already are. By embedding the experience within the Trafford Centre, it hopes to reach children who might never consider picking up a golf club, or even realise that golf could be fun.

The summer holidays are the perfect time to introduce young people to golf, added McAlister. And these Tiki Tips sessions offer exceptional value while still delivering quality coaching.

While the format may be unconventional, the purpose is clear. England Golf is investing in accessibility and removing the barriers that can make golf feel exclusive or intimidating. The goal is to show that the sport can be social, active and inclusive, all while working on your short game beside a giant plastic parrot.

The Tiki Tips programme is part of a wider push by England Golf to modernise the sport’s image and grow participation among younger and more diverse audiences. With family-friendly pricing, a welcoming environment and actual coaching from trained instructors, the sessions are being positioned as the perfect summer introduction to golf.

Tiki Tips: Putting in Paradise takes place on Wednesday 30 July at Paradise Island Adventure Golf in Manchester’s Trafford Centre. Booking is now open through England Golf.

Editor of GolfTimes.co.uk, I’m a communications and marketing professional with a background in global sports branding. I’ve worked alongside major clubs and helped launch sports brands from the ground up, blending strategic storytelling with commercial goals. I also make the odd appearance on news shows to discuss the intersection of sport, branding, and media. - When I’m not editing features or chasing down quotes, I’m usually on the course. I’ve been playing golf for over 10 years and currently play off a 14 handicap. My favourite course I’ve played is Bowood — a brilliant layout with plenty to think about. The toughest course I’ve faced? Bude. The weather was wild, the bounces unpredictable, and my swing decisions… debatable. Still, it’s the rounds like that which keep the game interesting. And humbling.
