American Golf, making golf affordable for all

Here’s how golfers can hit the course for under £400 this summer

Golf’s popularity boom is showing no signs of slowing down, with more beginners heading to driving ranges and golf courses across the UK. New search data from American Golf shows searches for “golf for beginners” have jumped by 30% in the past month alone. Searches for “best beginner golf sets” have also surged by 125% in the past quarter as more people look for affordable ways to start playing.

The numbers highlight how golf is continuing to shake off its old-fashioned image of expensive memberships and elite-only clubs. More beginners are discovering they can now build a solid starter setup without spending thousands. In many cases, players can get everything they need to tee off for less than £400.

Founded in 1978, American Golf has become the UK’s largest golf retailer, operating more than 80 stores across the UK and Ireland. The company employs over 350 PGA professionals and accredited custom fitting experts who help golfers improve their game at every level. That experience has given staff a front-row seat to the explosion in beginner interest across the sport.

Lewis Baker, Custom Fitting Manager at American Golf, says one of the biggest misconceptions surrounding golf is the belief that newcomers need to spend huge money immediately. He believes many beginners are surprised when they discover how affordable entry-level equipment has become. According to Lewis, confidence and comfort matter far more than buying tour-level technology.

“People think that golf is an elite sport, needing at least £1,000 just to get going,” Lewis explained. “But the truth is, most beginners can get absolutely everything they need for much less.” He added that many new golfers improve quicker when they use forgiving clubs designed specifically for beginners.

That advice could save first-time golfers a fortune. Rather than chasing expensive drivers or blades used by tour professionals, Lewis recommends focusing on package sets designed to make the game easier. Forgiving equipment can help beginners hit straighter shots and enjoy the game much faster during those early rounds.

“When you’re starting out, you don’t need the most advanced club available,” Lewis said. “You need something that helps you build confidence.” He added that a simple package set, comfortable shoes, a glove, tees and a handful of golf balls are more than enough for most beginners.

The wider golf industry is also becoming far more welcoming to casual players and newcomers. Many clubs have relaxed strict dress codes and are actively trying to make the sport feel less intimidating. The days of needing expensive trousers, formal shirts and premium memberships are quickly fading away.

Lewis believes that cultural shift is helping attract a younger and more diverse audience into golf. “Most courses have relaxed their clothing rules, so you don’t need something smart and expensive to wear,” he explained. “If your equipment is working with you rather than against you, you’ll improve far faster.”

Women’s golf is also continuing its rapid rise in popularity. Sales figures from American Golf show women’s package-set sales have increased by 29% over the past two years. Women’s golf clothing and footwear sales have also climbed by 18% during the same period.

“Women’s golf is growing fast, and the industry is finally responding with better, more affordable starter gear,” Lewis added. The growth mirrors wider trends across golf, with women’s participation increasing across driving ranges, beginner sessions and golf clubs throughout the UK. More brands are also now designing equipment specifically for female beginners entering the game.

Among Lewis’s recommended beginner products is the Fazer Ladies CTRX Graphite 10-Piece Package Set, currently reduced to £349. The set is designed to help new golfers launch the ball more easily while offering maximum forgiveness on mishits. Buyers also receive a free pack of golf balls as part of the offer.

For men, the Benross HTX2 Steel 11-Piece Package Set remains one of the standout beginner options currently available. Reduced from £589 to £429, the set offers a complete setup designed to help new golfers learn the game without unnecessary complications. It also includes a free pack of golf balls.

Lewis also highlighted the importance of smaller accessories that can improve comfort and consistency. Gloves, golf balls, shoes and tees can often make more difference than beginners realise during their first few rounds. Reliable grip and stable footwear can help new players build confidence much faster.

The Cobra Microflex glove pack, reduced to £11.99, was highlighted as one of the best-value accessories currently available for beginners. Meanwhile, the Greg Norman Bandit Waterproof Spikeless Shoes are now available for £49.99 and designed for all-weather comfort. TaylorMade Distance+ golf balls, priced at £21.99, were also recommended for helping beginners maximise distance and speed.

For anyone tempted to finally give golf a try this summer, the message from industry experts is becoming increasingly clear. You no longer need elite-level money to enjoy the sport. A full beginner setup can now cost less than many people spend on a weekend away.

The toughest course I’ve faced? Bude. The weather was wild, the bounces unpredictable, and my swing decisions… debatable. Still, it’s the rounds like that which keep the game interesting. And humbling.
