Mar Hall Golf and Spa Resort investment sets new benchmark for luxury and course quality

A bold new chapter for Mar Hall

A multi-million-pound transformation has ushered in a new era for Mar Hall Golf and Spa Resort. The Scottish estate near Glasgow has reopened with a refined identity and world-class guest experiences. Alongside that, the championship golf course has seen a serious investment in greenkeeping.

The grand reopening follows a remarkable £20 million renovation. It blends the resort’s rich heritage with imaginative design, luxury rooms and statement spaces. The hotel now features 74 guestrooms, a private cinema, two bars, and more.

Every area has been upgraded with the guest experience in mind. From the sweeping driveway to the luxurious Palm Parlour, elegance runs through every corner of the estate. It’s five-star Scotland, reimagined for the modern traveller.

Investing in excellence on the course

Andrew Eckford, Head Greenkeeper, has led the charge on the course transformation. He joined Mar Hall last year as part of a senior management recruitment drive. His immediate mission: rescue tired greens and bunkers in need of care.

“When I started, half the greens were moss-covered,” said Andrew. “Now we have structured maintenance with aeration, seeding and top-dressing.” A full bunker renovation and 1,400 tonnes of new sand were also added.

To deliver all this, the team invested in a new Toro fleet through Reesink Scotland. This includes the ProCore 648s aerator, HDX utility vehicle, sprayer, and precision mowers. It’s a fleet built for performance and efficiency.

A smarter way to greenkeep

Andrew emphasised the value of versatility in his equipment choices. Rather than buy individual machines for each job, he chose models that serve multiple roles. “Efficiency is key,” he says, highlighting the HDX utility vehicle’s versatility.

His crown jewel is the Toro Outcross, a workhorse that replaces two or three separate machines. Its smart programmable attachments simplify training and daily operations. Seasonal staff can now master one machine instead of many.

“The Outcross will be at the heart of our day-to-day operations,” Andrew explained. “It’s a smarter, more efficient way of working.” Greenkeeping is now future-proofed with tools that match the resort’s ambitions.

Raising bunker standards

Mar Hall’s new Sand Pro bunker rake has revolutionised bunker maintenance. Andrew brought the high standards he maintained at The Carrick to Mar Hall. Daily raking is now realistic with one machine, rather than a six-person team.

“Hand-raking used to take six people an entire day,” he shared. “Now one person can handle it easily.” Even after the huge sand replacement, efficiency has never been higher.

Andrew credits Toro for giving him the confidence to execute his vision. “Most greenkeepers have a go-to brand, and for me, that’s always been Toro,” he said. Backed by Reesink Scotland, it’s a relationship that’s already delivering results.

A five-star hotel renaissance

Beyond the course, Mar Hall has undergone a sweeping transformation. From the grand Palm Parlour entrance to the reimagined reception, every detail has been curated with care. Guests are welcomed into a world of heritage and modern comfort.

Room categories range from Classic Rooms to Grand Suites, complete with pool tables or pianos. Even the Spa Garden Suites offer private gardens for ultimate serenity. Each room reflects the character of the estate with quiet luxury.

The colour palettes are calming, the textures rich and tactile, and the overall ambience is sophisticated yet inviting. Guests can expect plush bedding, curated artwork, and bespoke furniture in every room. The interiors offer a refined contrast to the wild beauty just beyond the estate walls.

From the moment guests arrive, the sense of escape is immediate. Whether you’re curling up in a reading nook or sipping Champagne by the grand piano, Mar Hall offers moments of magic. It’s Scottish charm, wrapped in international luxury.

Dining and drinks redefined

At The Dining Room, Executive Chef Tony Tapia is crafting menus that champion Scottish produce. Seasonal dishes shine with bold local flavour and modern flair. Signature plates like West Coast Cullen and Spicy Raw Beef turn heads.

Meanwhile, the new Slàinte Bar pays homage to the art of the toast. Guests enjoy signature cocktails inspired by the estate’s 180-year history. Head Mixologist Chris Mullen leads the theatrical, flavourful experience.

The decor of The Dining Room is just as carefully considered as the food. Elegant lighting, statement centrepieces and warm tones create an indulgent yet comfortable setting. It’s a destination for both fine diners and casual celebrators.

Slàinte brings a sense of drama to the drinks experience. Expect smoky reveals, unexpected pairings and a little theatre with every glass. This is cocktail culture with a Scottish soul.

Wellness meets Scottish calm

The resort’s luxury spa offers calm in contrast to the energetic main building. A covered walkway connects guests to six treatment rooms and a 20-metre pool. There are also saunas, steam rooms and indulgent massage packages.

Spa days can be spent solo or shared with friends. Packages such as the Hebridean Hideout blend relaxation with regional ingredients. Guests can enjoy a seamless journey from massage to afternoon tea.

Lighting is soft and golden, helping guests unwind the moment they arrive. The scent of essential oils fills the air, creating a sensory welcome. Every inch has been designed for deep relaxation and refined indulgence.

Signature treatments use native ingredients like heather, salt, and honey. Skilled therapists personalise every experience to the guest’s mood and preferences. It’s escapism with a distinctly Scottish feel.

Experiences that go beyond golf

While golf is at the heart of Mar Hall, there’s much more to explore. Adrenaline lovers can book off-road 4×4 excursions or take to the skies on helicopter tours. For culture seekers, private distillery visits offer a taste of Scotland.

Falconry, axe throwing and archery are available within the estate grounds. Guests can also enjoy clay pigeon shooting or hike through nearby trails. A rental bike fleet helps visitors explore the 240-acre woodland setting.

The concierge team curates activities for all ages and interests. Want to kayak the River Clyde or book a whisky tasting? They’ll make it happen.

Families, couples and solo travellers will find something unforgettable. It’s the kind of place where one day is never enough. And that’s entirely the point.

Building for the future

The investment doesn’t stop here. Future plans include new private woodland lodges and enhancements to the clubhouse. The spa will also see continued upgrades.

It’s all part of a long-term vision from owners Dutco Group. Their goal is to establish Mar Hall as an international destination. With this investment, they’re well on their way.

Each upgrade adds a new layer of elegance and opportunity. Whether it’s luxury lodges or new dining spaces, every move feels considered. Mar Hall isn’t just expanding—it’s evolving.

Guests can expect continual improvements with every visit. This is not a one-off project but a commitment to excellence. It’s a masterclass in destination-building.

Greenkeeping worthy of a championship course

Andrew Eckford and his team have built a course that matches the hotel’s luxury feel. With Toro technology and dedicated staff, every fairway reflects care and vision. Golfers can now enjoy the same five-star standards outside as inside.

“We’re focused on putting Mar Hall back on the Scottish golfing map,” says Andrew. That mission is clearly underway. His equipment choices and maintenance plans are built for the long haul.

With support from Reesink Scotland and Toro, the future is bright. Mar Hall is now a serious contender among Scotland’s top golf destinations. And the greens speak for themselves.

I’ve been playing golf for over 10 years and currently play off a 14 handicap. My favourite course I’ve played is Bowood — a brilliant layout with plenty to think about. The toughest course I’ve faced? Bude. The weather was wild, the bounces unpredictable, and my swing decisions… debatable. Still, it’s the rounds like that which keep the game interesting. And humbling.
