Despite what the golf club manufacturers tell us, I sometimes feel like golf lacks a bit of innovation. Step forward Collin Morikawa to shake that all up. Morikawa is bringing an entirely new, eco-friendly twist to his game at the FedExCup Playoffs. One of golf’s favourite stars, known for his precision and calm under pressure, will be teeing off with a completely recycled golf bag – a symbol of sustainability and a celebration of the 2024 FedExCup Playoffs.
This unique piece of equipment is the result of a creative collaboration between FedEx, TaylorMade, and Ceeze Creative Studios, and we love it.
From Recycled Materials to the Fairway
The golf bag itself is a marvel of sustainable design. Crafted using soon-to-be-recycled FedEx packaging and upcycled TaylorMade golf gloves, this bag is not just about style – it’s a statement. “Yeah, really special bag. Really cool,” said Morikawa during a recent press conference. “I think obviously FedEx kind of did a little collab with TaylorMade, one of my sponsors, and created this bag special for the Playoffs, and it’s obviously very meaningful, not only how it’s built – you have recycled gloves on the side, recycled materials. Someone said there’s a part of a FedEx truck in it.”
Indeed, the bag’s construction features an array of repurposed materials, with every element carefully chosen to reflect its origins. Even the strap bears the FedExCup Playoffs logo and the airport codes for the three markets hosting the events: Memphis (MEM), Denver (DEN), and Atlanta (ATL). Inside, the lining is adorned with a patterned design featuring the FedExCup trophy, adding a touch of elegance to the eco-conscious creation.
We have to say though, the glove-clad side is what we love the most. Swoon!
More Than Just a Bag – A Charitable Mission
However, the bag is more than just a sustainable golf accessory. It carries with it a significant charitable mission. For every birdie or better that Morikawa makes during the Playoffs while using this bag, FedEx will donate $1,000 to St. Jude, the primary charitable beneficiary of the FedEx St. Jude Championship. “What this represents is really just an accumulation of the entire season,” Morikawa shared. “I think what’s so special about this bag and the next three weeks I’m going to be using it is that FedEx is going to be donating a thousand dollars per birdie I make for the Playoffs, and that’s very, very special.”
The commitment to St. Jude is particularly meaningful this year, as Morikawa’s wife, Katherine, is also gearing up to run the New York City Marathon with St. Jude as her chosen charity. The family’s dedication to supporting this cause adds a personal touch to the already impactful initiative.
A Bag That Tells a Story
Beyond its environmental and charitable significance, the bag also tells the story of the journey that every golfer takes during the FedExCup Playoffs. The choice to use recycled materials, including a rumored piece of a FedEx truck, symbolises the travel, challenges, and triumphs that are all part of the Playoffs. It’s a reminder that every element, no matter how small or seemingly insignificant, contributes to the bigger picture – much like every shot counts in golf.
The bag’s design also pays homage to the FedEx brand, with the TaylorMade logo and custom design elements prominently featuring the core FedEx colours of purple, orange, and white. These colours, synonymous with reliability and speed, are a fitting representation of Morikawa’s game – a blend of precision and swift execution.
Collin Morikawa: A Champion On and Off the Course
Morikawa’s choice to use this bag goes beyond personal preference; it’s a reflection of his values as both a golfer and an individual. This is why he is loved so much by golf fans around the globe.
His commitment to sustainability, coupled with his support for charitable causes, highlights the growing trend of athletes using their platforms to make a difference. By carrying this recycled bag, Morikawa isn’t just participating in the Playoffs – he’s making a statement about the importance of giving back and protecting the environment.
A New Chapter in Golfing History
As Morikawa steps onto the course with his recycled bag, he’s not only aiming for victory but also contributing to a new chapter in golfing history – one where sustainability and social responsibility take centre stage. His birdies will mean more than just points on the leaderboard; they’ll represent hope for those at St. Jude and a step towards a greener future. With his unique bag in tow, Morikawa is proving that in golf, as in life, it’s not just about where you’re going, but how you get there.
